Having just doubled its population from 2,, in , to 4,, by , Leadville's baby boom - and all that went along with it - was in full swing. Leadville Days Away is a love story. It is a about people - what draws us together, what pulls us apart. It is about the meaning of home. A story of courage, survival, heart, and soul; it is written with love. Love for Tibet and its people; and love for all the people who have cared - right or wrong - to try enough to do something by shedding light and spreading love. Leadville Days Away is a historical fiction novel that reads, sometimes, like a non-fiction because of richness in information and facts about the lives of the characters, the ordeals of the Tibetan Resistance, and those involved in the ST Circus operation.
It is a story to be engrossed in, full of the fondness of our human 'selves', our imperfections, and our strengths. It tells a story about the amazing power of Tibetans to love their homeland and to have survived such struggle. Get A Copy. Kindle Edition , pages. Oct 14, Diana rated it it was ok. I won this book through First Reads, and the author autographed it for me, which I appreciated.
Just to get a big of a triviality out of the way, I have no idea why this book was unpaginated. First of all, I have to say that the idea, the theme, for the book is superb. I love any story that uncovers something that the vast majority of people had no inkling of If you look around our society and hold up a cultural barometer, "Free Tibet," as the slogan goes, is pretty much up there with "Save the Whales" as a cause taken up by the dreadlocked, vegan, Birkenstock-clad, pot-smokers among us and I'm not even exagerrating, as one of the comments that I recently read on a pro-Tibetan independence Youtube video literally told people to "go back to smoking" their pot if they sympathized with the self-determination goals of Tibetans.
And yet, the irony is that fifty years ago, the Tibetal Uprising was a big deal in the world one free of internet connections and hour news cycles, I might add , and the American press, in particular, gave a healthy amount of coverage to it. People were interested, particularly with the news that the Dalai Lama had fled and for a time was not accounted for. So even though the idea behind "Leadville: Days Away" was excellent, the execution was less so. This is not an example of the "in medias res" plot technique, it is just a jumble of years and settings that flip the reader, for no discernable reason, back and forth in time and space without adding any value to the plot or the character development.

When you've got a book that deals with two very separate communities like this book does and you want to juxtapose those two communities throughout the plot, you just can't alternate both place and time - it just becomes too much and needlessly confuses the reader. In fact, I was really disappointed by the ending of the book. For me, the ideal ending would have been the couple of pages that make up the chapter "Darjeeling " - yes, it's the latest set of events presented in the story, but it also has some relatively strong writing that ties the story - well, the Tibetan part of it at least - together quite well and gives the reader a sense of closure.
Speaking of what I just referred to as the Tibetan part of the story - it goes without saying that the story of Tibetans that find themselves in a small town in the middle of the Colorado Rockies would include a few details of their encounters with the locals there, and justifiably so. They are technically relatively distanced from civilians, seeing as they were brought in to live, train, and spend their time exclusively at Camp Hale, the U.
Army Training Facility that was located in the town of Leadville. Whatever obstacles these two women have, not that the reader can really connect to either of these characters anyway, are frankly trivial in comparison to the plight of the the Tibetan people. The large chunk of space that the two Leadville women are dedicated in the book quite frankly does nothing for the story but steals attention away from the Tibetans. The other thing is the weak character development.
If only the author would have let me in on the feelings of the characters - particularly Tenzing, Lhosta, Tiyo, and Dhanthra - with as much detail as she devoted to describing the lipstick and nail polish that the bar women wore.

However, with the writing being full of awkwardly-formed sentences, typos, and grammatical errors, it's hard enough to really get into the book. I also didn't get a feel for time in the book Anyone who watches "Mad Men" can tell you that chances are, someone will utter a "swell" before the episode is over.
A great part of this story is set in the 50s and yet the language at Leadville has no hint of being from the same time period. The title of the book did not leave an impression on me because the concept of being " days away" was not very well developed. Towards the end of the book, the CIA man who worked with the three Tibetan brothers finds himself now a member of the Secret Service, working the room while President Nixon meets with his Chinese counterpart during that president's historic visit to China.
What I took issue with, was how surprised that character was portrayed as being when Nixon never brought up Tibet during the talks. I found this to be a bit naive. Anyone involved in national security during that time would have known that if the U. However the conflicted sense of helplessness, of longing to reverse an injustice but being just a cog in the wheel, and the contest between acting on principle to further another people's survival or acting on practicality to maintain the survival of your own - those are the what he should have felt.
Having said that, I would have appreciated a more convincing and more consistent portrayal of the CIA character as someone who truly got behind the cause of the men he was training.
